Captain's Message 2018

When I first joined DCLGA fifty years ago, I never imagined that I would serve on Committee, let alone be appointed Captain. I am greatly honoured and proud to be in this position and will try to serve the County and all its members to the best of my ability.

I look forward to working with my Vice-Captain, County Training Officer Chris Pascall and the members of the Durham Squad. Our County Match Week this year is at Huddersfield Golf Club and we are hoping to acquit ourselves well. We would love to see you there, if only for one day – home support does a lot to boost morale. If some of you are able to assist by acting as trolley-pullers, so much the better. ANY encouragement is welcome.

Hopefully, I will see most of you at one or all of our competitions. Remember, these are open to golfers of ALL abilities.

Best wishes to you all for 2018. May you enjoy good health, good weather, and, of course, good golf.

Captain’s Charity 2018

My chosen Charity this year is “Daft as a Brush”, founded five years ago by Brian Burnie, a Northumberland businessman. The Charity transports patients who require specialist Radio/Chemotherapy treatment at the Freeman or RVI Hospitals in Newcastle. They cover a large area from Northumberland to North Yorkshire.

Anyone who has experience, as a patient, friend or relative, of these treatments know that to remove the anxiety of journey times, parking places and fees is a tremendous service. At present, there are twenty ambulances, eighteen of which have been adopted and decorated by local primary schools. Each trip involves a driver and a companion, but family members are also welcome. Last year these volunteers made 50,000 patient journeys. Their aim is to build up to 100,000.

In 2018 there will be a Charity Golf Tournament, in aid of “Daft as a Brush”, at Prudhoe Golf Club. The format is a 4 person team scramble. Entry fee £80 per team, including meal.

I hope that you will help me to raise funds for this very worthwhile cause, especially by supporting our own Charity Scramble at Whitburn on July 25th.
