Northern Counties Match Week 2017

Morecambe Golf Club

Mon 19th June - Fri 23rd June 2017 - Morecambe Golf Club

Sunday 18th June

The team is looking forward to County Match Week 2017 which is being hosted by Lancashire this year at Morecambe Golf Club.

Monday 19th June

Today's matches were against Yorkshire and although the Durham Team lost 7.5 - 1.5 that result does not really do justice to the standard of play and how close all of the singles matches were with five of the six matches being decided on the 18th and the other match going to the 17th.

It was such a shame for the team to lose so many matches on the final hole.

Tuesday 20th June

Another hot day but with a strong wind. The Durham team were up against our local rivals Northumberland.

The girls tried their best but were beaten by a rejuvenated Northumberland, it was a close match 5/4 played in a great spirit.

Durham play Cheshire tomorrow, so we will have to play very well to beat them (Northumberland lost 5/4 to them yesterday). The weather forecast isn't great as there are threats of lightning which may cause some problems.

Wednesday 21st June

A really hot day, so much so, towels with ice were required on the 10th tee and an enterprising local local tradesman parked his ice cream van in the car park and generated half his annual income in one afternoon.

Briony and Gabrielle had 5 birdies in 6 holes in their 2/1 win.

Another close match with Durham losing to Cheshire, who we beat last year, 5.5/3.5.

Cumbria tomorrow which is a must win or we will be bottom (or should I say 6th?).

Thursday 22nd June

A much more comfortable day weatherwise but with quite a tricky wind to make play "interesting".

Kitana holes a good putt to win her match.

Durham really didn't have the run of the ball today and as a result of a few unlucky bounces and a couple of loose shots the team lost 6/3 to Cumbria.

After a hard day on the golf course, the trolley pullers relax.

Friday 23rd June

A very wet morning so the foursomes matches were reduced to 9 holes.

This picture really sums up an unfortunate week for Durham with a great drive ending up 20 foot above ground stuck in a tree!

Despite some valiant efforts (with 3 of the singles matches going to the 18th), it was impossible for the Durham team to overcome the morning deficit and the match against the hosts Lancashire was lost 7.5/1.5.

The results throughout the week do not really reflect how well the team played and how close most of the matches were. However, we are determined to do better next year at Huddersfield where its Yorkshire's turn to host. Why don't you come along and support the team and see some great golf?
