The first day of the County Championship saw the players taking part in the strokeplay stage of the competition. Despite the rather damp conditions there was some great golf played with Jess Hall of Bishop Auckland golf club playing the first round in 70 shots setting a new course record for Houghton-le-Spring. She went round in 71 in the second round making a total of 141 for the two rounds and winning the leading qualifier prize.
Izzy Stokes of Eaglescliffe golf club went round in net 69 in the first round and 67 in the second to reduce her handicap and win the best net qualifier prize by 7 shots.
It was damp again on day two for the first two rounds of matchplay. Thanks to the sterling efforts of the members and greenkeeping staff of Houghton they managed to keep the greens free of puddles and we were able to complete all the matches just before the heavens opened again.
Although it was much sunnier on Monday morning when the players set of for the semi-final matches, the fine weather didn't last for long and it started to rain when the players were about half way through their rounds.
Fortunately the course held up to allow the semi-finals to be completed. However, with more rain over lunchtime it became impossible for the green staff and their helpers to keep the greens open and the final had to be postponed. We will let you know the revised date once it has been confirmed.
The full results can be found here.
We did manage to hold a prizegiving where the majority of the trophies could be presented.
